Portable Apps - Portable Computer

Most people are not yet aware that they can carry their computer on their key chain, around their neck or in their pocket.

Why do I say that?

Have you ever heard of portable applications? These are apps for short that you can install on a keychain and run on any Windows computer without leaving a trace. On top of all that they are VERY fast because many of the links to Windows are not needed. So even if you had an old computer that was running Microsoft Outlook 2007 as slow as a dog, you can revive it with Portable Apps!

I hope you realize that when you carry these apps around, you carry them on a memory stick, USB stick or flash drive, or ... when are we going to give these things a standard name???? It is getting frustrating. I will call them USB sticks to simplify or perhaps even to complicate more the name-calling.

Here is the latest portable app I have discovered, called affectionately, CODYSAFE. According to the description this is what Codysafe can do.

"CodySafe is a menu utility for portable applications. Turn your USB flash drive to a computer-on-stick. You may add, manage and launch your portable applications with ease and comfort. You can manage documents, multimedia files and pictures. You can keep your disk healthy with Drive Doctor. You will always know how much memory is used and available on your disk. These and numerous other useful features and options make CodySafe indispensable. Enjoy operating you USB flash drive or portable hard disk with CodySafe. The management of your portable documents, multimedia files and pictures has never being that easy. Add and control your portable applications with maximum convenience. Enjoy stylish and elegant menu, designed especially for Windows Vista and Windows 7.Version adds new command line arguments and languages."

Okay, okay. I haven't even told you much about portable apps and now I am already giving you a menu for them! Yes I realize I jump from thought to thought a lot. Once I ..... not now! You can find many other useful portable applications here where they have their own system menu. You can either download the whole Portable Apps Suite or individual programs that you need. I recommend that you only download apps that are immediately useful to you. You can always go back for more later.

The beauty of these applications is that in their effort to be portable, they have created faster, smoother, bare-bones apps that can speed up your whole work efforts. Right now I am creating this posting using Firefoxportable.

You can have your email, antivirus, internet security, word processor, graphics and photo programs all on a USB stick which you carry with you to use on any computer without leaving a trace.

FREEWARE: What is it? Is it Any Good?

Freeware is exactly what it says, FREE! Sometimes the author may ask you to register so he/they can inform you of new versions and so on. However FREE means FREE.

Q: Is it any good compared to commercial software?
A: Much of it may be better. Just because a company is big and sells software in boxes does not mean it is the best. Some of the VERY BEST software is absolutely free.

We will discuss one of my favorites, Irfanview. Since 2003, IRFANVIEW HAS HAD OVER 1 MILLION DOWNLOADS EVERY MONTH !!!

Irfanview is one of my all-time favorites because it can do so much with graphics or photos at absolutely no cost to you. However because I have used the program so much, I have donated to his cause.

I include here the author's description: What is Irfanview?

"IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals.

IrfanView is trying to create new and/or interesting features in its own way, unlike some other graphic viewers, whose whole "creativity" is based on feature cloning, stealing of ideas and whole dialogs from ACDSee and/or IrfanView! (for example: XnView has been stealing/cloning features and whole dialogs from IrfanView, for 8+ years).

IrfanView was the first Windows graphic viewer WORLDWIDE with Multiple (animated) GIF support.
One of the first graphic viewers WORLDWIDE with Multipage TIF support.
The first graphic viewer WORLDWIDE with Multiple ICO support.

Some IrfanView features
  • Many supported file formats (click here the list of formats)
  • Multi language support
  • Thumbnail/preview option
  • Paint option - to draw lines, circles, arrows, straighten image etc.
  • Toolbar skins option
  • Slideshow (save slideshow as EXE/SCR or burn it to CD)
  • Show EXIF/IPTC/Comment text in Slideshow/Fullscreen etc.
  • Support for Adobe Photoshop Filters
  • Fast directory view (moving through directory)
  • Batch conversion (with image processing)
  • Multipage TIF editing
  • File search
  • Email option
  • Multimedia player
  • Print option
  • Support for embedded color profiles in JPG/TIF
  • Change color depth
  • Scan (batch scan) support
  • Cut/crop
  • IPTC editing
  • Effects (Sharpen, Blur, Adobe 8BF, Filter Factory, Filters Unlimited, etc.)
  • Capturing
  • Extract icons from EXE/DLL/ICLs
  • Lossless JPG rotation
  • Unicode support
  • Many hotkeys
  • Many command line options
  • Many PlugIns
  • Only one EXE-File, no DLLs, no Shareware messages like "I Agree" or "Evaluation expired"
  • No registry changes without user action/permission!
  • and much much more"

Video Summary:
IrfanView video tutorial. If you're just starting out or you're still saving for the pricey juggernaut, Adobe Photoshop CS3, there's a freeware application that will do the job until you can make the jump to the professional software. Heard About Ning and Tangle?

Ning claims that it lets you discover and create new social networks for your interests and passions.
I have only started to try it out. It is free but unlike blogger, their are already ads placed by the developers along the sides of your blog. Give it a try. I am not sure it can be quite as useful as blogger for general personal use but it is worth a look

Tangle, formerly called Godtube has blossomed into a full-blown prettier-than-facebook social networking site. You can form groups, invite friends, organizations or upload photos or videos or music.

Time for a New Computer?

from Dr T --

When is it Time For a New Computer?

A reader asks: I have had my computer for quite some time now and my grandkids are always telling me I need to get a new one. They say mine is too slow and it just doesn't work right. As for me, I'm not convinced. Do you have any guidelines I can follow to see if I really should get a new one or not?

Good question! Isn't it funny how everyone's views on the same exact topic can be so different? I mean, it's obvious the person who asked today's question is being bombarded by their grandchildren to get a new computer. And why do you think they want a new one? Well, so they can have all the perks they're used to when they go visit grandma and grandpa, of course! Then on the other hand, grandma and grandpa don't agree and they think their computer works just fine.

Well, it's hard to tell who is right here. Children these days are very much into computers and they know a lot more about them than some of us would like to admit. But then again, if our computers are working good enough to do what we want on them, why bother buying a whole new one? That debate could go on and on, so I think I'll end it by giving you some pointers you can follow to see if you really should buy a new computer or not. Let's check them out!

First of all, as you all know, technology is changing everyday. There's always something new coming out and there's always something different to try. It's not always pertinent that you go along with those changes, but here are some reasons why you may want to. You need a new computer if:

1.) Your processor speed is less than 1.0 GHz (gigahertz). (On another note, if your computer is still running on megahertz, you'll definitely want to make an upgrade soon!) See, most programs and other applications that you may put on your computer require a lot more power than 1 GHz can give them. If you don't have a fast enough processing speed, your computer will run very slow and you won't be able to browse the Internet, play games, etc. with the ease you should have. You can check your processor speed by going to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System.

2.) Your computer has less than 256 MB of memory. (Again, go to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System to check on that information). If you don't have at least 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM memory, your computer will not run smoothly or to the best of its ability.

3.) You're using a Windows version that starts with a 3 or a 9 (for example, Windows 3.1, 95 and 98). Those older operating systems lack a lot of the features every computer should have these days, including security features and other updates that are required to keep your computer running properly and protected. The same thing applies if you're using a Mac version that is older than OS X.

4.) Your monitor is a 14 inch or smaller. If you don't have at least a 17 inch monitor, you're not going to be able to see full Web sites, which really is a shame!

5.) You're always getting an error message of "Operating system not supported" when you try to install new programs onto your PC. Or, when you're trying to upgrade to a new operating system and you get an error message of "Hardware not supported."

6.) Your computer has no USB ports. Nowadays, most external devices (such as keyboards, mice, printers, etc.) run via USB. Therefore, if you don't have any ports, you're going to have trouble keeping up with the newer computer devices.

7.) Your PC has a 5.25 inch disk drive or even a 3.5 inch floppy drive. Floppy drives are still around, but they're being phased out as well. Software has just outgrown those two drives and they won't be of much use in the near future. Flash and thumb drives are definitely taking over.

So, those are just a few things you should look into if you're wondering about buying a new computer or not. They are all good reasons why you should fork out the money and invest in a new PC. And I'm not just saying that to make your grandchildren happy either! With a brand new computer, everyone who uses it (including you) will benefit. Now, I realize you may use your computer on a very limited basis (maybe just for checking your e-mail and playing a game here and there), but if you fall into any of the categories listed above, you should still look into getting a new computer.

Yes, I know change is hard to take, but I think once you get your new computer up and running, you will agree with me on everything I said today. On the other hand, if you answered "no" to almost all of the specifications above, you should be fine with the computer you have. And if your grandchildren still complain, just tell them once they give you enough money for a new PC, you'll go right out and buy one. That should do the trick!

Note: The above was sent to me in an email.

To add to the suggestions above, I might add that a NEW computer will probably cost you about 1/2 to 1/10th as much as that old computer did when new!

I was just looking at Walmart and saw a comprehensive Emachines computer for $498 including 19"monitor!

See CPEDLEY.COM for some great discounts on Dell Computers.
